Council members Anthony Piagentini, Kevin kramer, and David James all said they support this outrageous budget plan. Firing one bad cop 15 years too late isn’t enough. Council member Brandon Coan has offered an alternative budget plan here. Please contact your Metro Councilperson now and demand Greg Fischer be removed from office.johnkinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12678968033643697113noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3912670805157408976.post-62026265260806837312019-06-06T13:02:00.001-07:002019-06-06T13:18:29.233-07:00Chop Off Their Heads

Recently I was listening to the BBC World Service covering the Yellow Vest revolutionary political movement protesting the disproportionate burden placed on low income citizens in France which, at times, became violent. The journalist asked someone in the protest why he thought the same movement hadn't caught on in the US given the economic similarities in both nations. The protester replied that when Americans think of a revolution they think of throwing tea into a harbor, and when the french think of a revolution they think about chopping off heads.

After watching what is going in in our fair city, with the mayor siphoning city funds earmarked for 'Affordable Housing' and giving it human rights violator Gil Holland in the form of forgivable loans to build upscale pricey apartments in economically depressed areas of town; and seeing the city bulldoze homeless people into the street in the middle of winter, I wonder how on earth hasn't a similar colored vest movement started here.

One movement that has gained significant ground is the removal offensive statues from public lands. After a long fought battle the Prentice statue has been removed from the York street library, and the Castleman statue could be next. But there is opposition. And aside from that, it seems to take forever for the city to agree to do anything about public art in this town; we witnessed this first hand when we offered to pay for and install the We Gon' Be Alright mural on Hill street. And after about a dozen meetings with the city we realized they were just waiting us out; never intending to rubber stamp our mural that was based on respect and equality.

It's expensive to remove statues, and even more expensive to replace them with someone else. It could take decades if at all the way our broken Mayor's office operates. We kept thinking of a solution on how to replace these offensive statues and still have the opportunity to correct history and honor someone worthy... And then Oldham County unveiled their statue of Colonel William Oldham; their county's namesake. There wasn't any images of Colonel William Oldham's face to use for the sculpture, so the sculptor, Louisvillian Matt Weir, used the face of a distant relative of William Oldham, folk musician Will Oldham. What a brilliant idea, and a pleasant Kentuckian to use as a surrogate.

This got us thinking.. Instead of using city funds to remove these offensive statues, and even more city founds to replace them, why not just chop off their heads and for a fraction of the cost replace the heads with someone more worthy to honor? It could be a celebrated ongoing project in town. Something just "Keep Louisville Weird" enough to embrace, but would save money in a time of huge budget deficits and something the outside world might want to adopt; spreading good social justice in a creative fashion.

People ask us whose faces would we rather see swapped out on our public sculptures; And we say that isn't for us to decide.. Allowing a privileged few decide what parts of history we celebrate and what parts we ignore got us into this mess in the 1st place. It should be up to the PEOPLE to decide, not a rich or powerful few who want to write history to their benefit, and not the city who would stonewall anything that doesn't uphold their power veneer.

So this time we are not going hat-in-hand to city hall begging them to please hear our idea to brighten the city's public spaces and to get rid of statues honoring classist and racist people just so they can ignore us; but instead we will deliver a petition demanding the project happen, and we greatly appreciate your signature as well as your choice on whose faces we would be proud to see celebrated everyday.
Please sign our petition on Moveon.org here.johnkinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12678968033643697113noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3912670805157408976.post-50919790074172357862018-12-05T21:49:00.001-08:002018-12-05T21:49:21.038-08:00Meeting: I Am Still Here

Released on November 5th in support of those who fight daily against injustice and inequality.

This album was created by Hijack using the nearly forgotten art of break beat turntablism; This technique of music making was the catalyst for the early Bronx incubator of American Hip Hop. Funk, Soul, and Disco were the primary records used in break beating; as what was primarily used on this album.

Truth Church was released on Nov. 5th by The Electric Church Of The Tambourine in partnership with the Louisville is for Lovers record label in an ongoing series of protest and activist music. The idea is to incorporate as many artists from the surrounding neighborhoods (California, Limerick, Old Louisville, Park Hill, St. Joseph, Shelby Park, Smoketown, Card Town, Schnitzelburg, Germantown, Algonquin, and Merriwether) as possible. With that in mind we have decided to split each phrase in half (see template) to make a total of 4 sections and have 4 artists/crews work on each, and when completed all sections should line up together. The only stipulation is the lettering size and placement be congruent, the rest is entirely up to you (foreground, background, font, etc.).
Please visit our Mural Information page for details.

Here in our hometown, Louisville, the day Trump was elected someone spray painted "we gon' be alright" on the retaining wall on Hill street. The slogan comes from the Kendrick Lamar song 'Alright' and was adopted in 'Black Lives Matter' campaigns. on March 10th the city got whitewashed in preparation of Trump's rally in Louisville on MondayMarch 18th. The "We Gon' Be Alright" sign on Hill Street was a beacon of hope for many of us since Trump won the election, and to make matters worse, there was a strict 'No Signs Allowed' rule during his rally, but we cannot be silenced! So we took a bucket of chalk on saturday before the rally and replaced the sign 100 times for Trump and the world to see. The city quickly washed the 100 chalk 'We Gon' Be Alright' signs down.
We are now collecting signatures to present to the city demanding an official mural be put in it's place, one that won't be silenced by the government. The petition is here, please sign and share.

This album is being released on Presidential Inauguration Day as a socially conscious 'Class War Protest' against the greed of the ruling class, and the coronation of billionaires into the highest seats of federal government. Together with The Gallery Singers At Electric Church Of The Tambourine and Louisville Is For Lovers, we are standing in solidarity against the fascist oppression and economic slavery of 50 million Americans. This is a call to action. The dismantling of democracy and government mandated economic servitude will no longer be tolerated.

In my near 40 years on this planet, your run for presidency was the first time I had felt hope for our future as a nation. For the first time in my life I dutifully donated monthly to your campaign; which is not easy for someone who lives on about ten thousand dollars a year. Growing up a poor person one becomes aware and then numb to the fact that things won't get better, that elected officials see you as worthless, that you are punished by the system for the simple luck of being born poor.

You changed that for me. For once I had hope that someone was listening. Someone was willing to step up and demand a change. That education, health care, job security, and peace of mind should not be a privilege, but a right for all Americans. That overinflated health care, real estate, and college educations are tools to keep poor Americans in their place with no hope to ever break free from an institutionalized economic slavery.

And just when we needed you most, you abandoned us and became a puppet for the very people who have exploited us and actively worked to derail the revolution you started. I am embarrassed for donating what little I had to your campaign, I am embarrassed for joining your rallies, and most of all I am embarrassed for allowing myself to believe in something I have known my whole life to be true: No one in government cares about us beyond what they can take away from us. And nothing will change for us, unless it gets worse.

In many ways what you have done is worse than the politicians who came before you. To be given hope only for it to be snatched away and thrown back in our face is much worse than not having hope to begin with. In some ways it may be a blessing, for I will never allow myself to become a pawn again for a politician.

The expected life span for someone in my economic demographic is around 60; much less than privileged Americans. I have lived nearly two thirds of my life already. It is just a fact that poor people know. We will live shorter, more stressful lives than someone of your standing. It isn't fair of course, but there is nothing we can do about it. You allowed me to believe that while this might not change for me, it could change for the millions of Americans who will be born after I am gone.

For this, I cannot forgive you. Lower income Americans have to struggle every day of their lives with no hope of refuge. To give millions of Americans hope only to switch sides and try to connivence them to support the very corrupt system you once swore to defeat is deplorable.

The only hope 50 million of us can have is by demanding change. Real change. Not one side or the other of the same coin. Not one of two choices that clearly have no reason to help those at the bottom. But a change for equality. For freedom from economic slavery. Not millionaires and billionaires that represent 1%. It is time for a change Bernie, and you are standing in the way.

Very Truly,

John King

It's a war against you, and it's being waged by elected officials. When the mayor of Louisville says he will veto any minimum wage increase over $9/hr he is solidifying laws meant to keep the poor locked in economic slavery. When the governor of Kentucky says he will dismantle Affordable Health Care and cut funding to public education he is actively trying keep poor Kentuckians bound to a difficult life without access to basic rights or a way to escape poverty. The time is now to stand up and fight for your basic freedoms! The time is now to say No More! The time Is now to say POWER TO THE POOR!
Would you watch from the safety of land as all the passengers slipped under the waves or would you swim like hell to the ship and try to save at least one?

What would you be thinking if, instead, you were a passenger on the ship watching the people on the shore line as you slowly sank into the ocean?

This hypothetical scenario can explain the Electric Church of the Tambourine’s principles in several ways. We believe our society is like a sinking ship, with too much power and money in the hands of a few, leading our society to ruin, while those at the bottom are like the passengers on a ship, hopeless to escape.
Here at the Electric Church we cannot just stand idly by and watch those in suffering sink further into ruin. It is easy to also feel like a hopeless bystander on the shore not sure how to help. We believe through community we can make a lasting change for the better.
